Why didn't the Cold War end with Stalin's death?

And that list includes such horrid American misdeeds as pressuring Ferdinand Marcos to step down.

I never said that all use of American power (covertly or otherwise) was bad. In fact, I don't believe as such. I was simply taking issue with your statement that the US was 'largely indifferent to the political arrangements of countries not hostile to the US'.

Mostly because 'not hostile to the US' is an almost meaningless phrase. It doesn't take much work to stretch the definition to 'hostile to the interests of the US' or 'hostile to US interests'.

For instance, I rather think that if a country makes a US business feel bad about itself... errr lose some money by having some of its assets nationalized/threatened the reaction of the US shouldn't be to topple... err encourage residents of said country to overthrow the government. Especially if the government was democratically elected. Yet that is exactly what the US did in places like Guatamala in 1954.

Hardly a shining hour of US foreign policy.
