On November 5, *three days after* the story broke, Bush was leading in most of the polls--by three points in ABC, four points in CBS, nine (!) points in voter.com, three points in NBC/Wall Street Journal, six points in IBF/CSM/TIPP, two points in CNN/USAToday/Gallup, three points in Hotline, two points in Pew, etc. Even on November 6, the majority of polls showed Bush leading the popular vote. http://www.pollingreport.com/wh2genT.htm

Basically, the polls simply overestimated the Republican percentage in 2000 as they did in 2012. In any event, if there was a slippage by Bush in the last few days, it is not clear that it was because of the DUI revelation rather than his Social Security gaffe. http://articles.latimes.com/2000/nov/04/news/mn-46936
Perhaps both, but I find it hard to credit that in order to mask one more misspeak on the part of GWB they released a much more damaging story. The fact that Fox was the delivery method suggests that it was a GOP person who released the story. I always figured it was McCain or one of his people that did it to try some last minute sabotage.

The DUI charge did give Gore a last-minute surge of momentum. But Gore was also leading in most polls through mid-October, up until the debates, and the negative coverage he received in two of three debates (sighing in one, invading Bush's personal space in the other), really hurt him. It was very similar to 2012 - except Gore could never really rebound like Obama did in the second and third debates.

It was a crazy election from a polling perspective. Polls were all over the place, though most did have Bush leading.
