Why didnt First Crusaders destroy the Dome of the Rock?

Crusaders massacred both Jews, and Muslims but clearly didn't destroy the Wailing Wall or the Dome?

Why did they refrain?

What if they did?

They evidently liked its architecture, as they turned it into a church.

As for the Wailing Wall, it's a wall - there wouldn't be any particular reason to destroy it.

Judaism and Christianity didn't diverge until after the death of Christ. The Crusaders would have probably seen any Jewish monuments or artefacts from before that period as being part of their own heritage as much as that of the Jews. Kinda like how some churches borrowed architectural features from the Temple of Solomon.

For the same reason that the Ottomans turned the Hagia Sophia into a Mosque and the Spanish turned the main Mosque in Cordoba into a Cathedral. The actual structural requirements of a Mosque and a Cathedral are actually pretty similar with the exception of the minarets so why bother going to all the effort of knocking down a perfectly sound building to replace it with something fairly similar.

I always thought that people who requesitioned a place of worship for their own religion like that did so as a sort of statement of superiority over their vanquished foes. "Hey look, their inferior religion was squashed under our boot heals, we even took their church from them!"

That as well but no one has ever lost money by betting on human laziness.
