Why Cabot Lodge 1960?

Nixon nominated Henry Cabot Lodge for VP.

I believe that had circumstances required it the guy would have been an adequate President.

However one would normally hope the VP would take their home state. Since Nixon was running against John Kennedy of Mass there was presumably no way Cabot Lodge could have taken his home state over the line for Republicans.

Was it Nixon wanting to make peace with the Eastern Establishment?

By the way had he run Rockerfeller would he have carried NY and the Presidency>?

1. Because Nixon wanted to focus on Foreign over Domestic affairs (which he saw the Democrats having an advantage with) and chose the well respected Ambassador to the United Nations to highlight this focus.

2. Unlikely because Rockerfeller ran against Nixon in the Primaries. Also it would require Rockerfeller to want to be Vice President.
