José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, better known as Pancho Villa.
Having survived an assassination attempt in July 1923, he went on to become the biggest force in Mexican politics and in 1929 he became President of the Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
Between 1929 and 1948 he and his supporters enacted many reforms and reorganisations that left Mexico the powerful American nation it is today.
He resigned on his 70th birthday (5 June 1948) though he retained a strong influence in Mexican politics right up until his death in 1959.
