Lung cancer, which is now in remission.
Indeed. In fact, JFK Jr's resignation is one of the major factors leading to the current messy five way spliting of the US party system. The fragile "Liberal Party" which was formed in the late 2000s was originally formed by the merger of the Democratic Party and the Union Party (a major third party since the 1970s in the 50 years timeline), with the goal of preventing the Republicans from winning in 2008, which they where successful in doing. However, after JFK Jr was forced to resign, the presidency passed to his VP, Katherine Swift. She proved to be too devisive a figure, and soon the Liberal Party tore itself apart, with those who supported President Swift reverting to the "Democratic" title, and those who supported Senator Morgan Spurlock forming the "New Union" party. This had the effect of "opening the feild" to the Libertarians and the Greens, both of whom already had small holdings, but the realigning election of 2012 brought those two parties rocketing into the mainstream. Since 2012, this five party system has remained in place, with none of the five major parties being able to secure a clear majority.
