Who would take over if everyone died at Hastings?

So, I have a question: If both King Harold and Duke William die at Hastings, as well as all the Godwinson brothers, who would take over England? And what would be the effects of such an event?

When I read the title I thought you wanted every single living thing murdered on the battlefield. Upon reading the thread I no longer seriously question your sanity.

Yep, that's right. ROCKS FALL, EVERYONE DIES. THE GROUND IS SALTED AND BURNED, THE SKIES WILL RAIN WITH FIRE, AND A PORTAL TO HELL IS OPENED.

Nah, but with the wording of the thread, I can see why you'd think that.

Well, you still have Edgar Atheling, who is considered the 'Last' King of England by the Norman-apologists and most English/British historians.

Also, there is a possibility that Sweyn II of Denmark might take advantage of the power-fluctuations and invade England as he did in OTL (although here he took a bribe from the Conqueror and returned to Denmark).

Also, though unlikely, The Conqueror does have some sons...

The Atheling back by whats left of the nobility and church?

Wern't William's sons pretty young when he invaded though?

The Atheling is best bet for the Saxons.

However, if Edwin (of Mercia) and his brother Morcar (Northumbria) decide to make their own bid for power, things could get messy. If they both back the Atheling, they should (I think) be united enough to resist further Norse/Danish probing.

Edgar the Atheling is a possibility, but the problem is that he's only 14 and spent virtually all of his life in exile, in Hungary. He also has no relatives or strong allies to champion his claim to the Crown.

I suppose Edwin and Morcar would be the best bet for kingship, but could the Saxons pull a Vortigern and invite a foreign leader (though not a Norman, and neither Edgar either) along with his soldiers, to rule them?
