Who Would Make the Best Replacement for Dan Quayle in 1992?

If George H.W. Bush had decided on dropping Dan Quayle from the Republican National ticket of 1992, who would make the best replacement? Going back to the Bush Campaign's Vice Presidential vetting process in 1988, according to Jack Nelson and Richard Meyer's article, Bush considered as alternates for Quayle, Kansas Senator Bob Dole, New York Congressman Jack Kemp, and former Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole. Not sure if he'd still consider any of those folks four years later for replacing Quayle, but any of them would do more for the Republican National ticket in 1992 than Dan Quayle ever could do.

Not sure if he'd still consider them four years later for replacing Quayle but, any of them are infinitely smarter than Quayle and probably ease the pain of Bush's defeat in November.

That's a tough one. On the one hand, dumping Quayle would help Bush for obvious reasons, on the other hand, Quayle was well liked by social conservatives and dumping him could piss them off, so Bush would need someone who's both socially conservative and not prone to gaffes.

Best candidate to replace DQ in 1992 is Colin Powell. Maybe not the most realistic candidate for a variety of reasons but definitely the best.

according to Jack Germond and Jules Witcover in their book Mad as Hell: Revolt at the Ballot Box,

pre-campaign, Quayle was traveling around the country talking to groups and he "got" the '91 recession. Bush never did.

and/or as president, he didn't want to be the cause of lack of confidence deepening the recession, little bit of tricky dilemma there.
