Advantage of the better defensive terrain. A-H largely handled Italy alone IOTL, and this with the bulk of her forces fighting Russia.
 
As in OTL. Italy would be on the defense pretty much from the start on. As in OTL, they would be really good at it, especially if the Austro-Hungarian high command would still be the same blistering idiots. However Austro-Hungary has the larger resources and better industrial capacity and sooner or later it will wise up and get some really competent military leaders and some really good new technology...
 
I honestly think Cadorna could have contrived an Italian defeat if the Austrians had put Potoriek in command! Worst military commander of all the major powers and that not without some competition.
 
With no Russia and Serbia to contend with? Conrad descends from the alps alone and unarmed, and the Royal Italian Army routes on sight.
