Who would have been the leader of the Soviet Union after Gorbachev?

Exactly what it says on the tin.

If the Soviet Union hadn't collapsed, who would have gone after Gorbachev? I'm not really looking for the plausibility of the USSR surviving in the state that it was in, however.

Sorry if this has been answered before, the search function wasn't working...

Assuming Gorbachev's position and support within the Party was still secure, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't still be leader today.

Depends on the direction that the Soviet Union goes, hard-line or reformist (none are mutually exclusive either). I'd look the current leadership for leftist parties in Russia. From what I hear, it would most likely be Gennady Zyuganov, who'd be more of a hard-line figure (supporter of the legacy of Stalin for one). Gennady Semigin is a more nationalist figure, but also has socialist ideals (he was a competitor with Zyuganov).

I agree w/Thande, though I wonder if Commrade Putin might not have maneuvered his way to the top in TTL as in OTL.

I think Putin had the benefit of a weak Russia and shifting bureaucracy. He was in a position that was relatively stable compared to the rest of the government. Not sure if that would exist to the degree it did in post-Soviet Russia.
