As retribution for the invasion of Portugal, French Guiana was occupied in 1809 with 700 Portuguese troops from Para. The invasion force sailed with 1 Royal Navy Frigate and 4 Portuguese ships.
The invasion began on 15 December 1808 and the French governor surrendered at Cayenne without resistance on January 12, 1809.
At the Congress of Vienna, the Portuguese agreed to return the territory, however the borders were established with France. It was only on 21 November 1817 that the Portuguese returned the territory to the French.
