Who would become the first astronaut if Britain launch the first man in space

A very useful attribute.

A little OT but in my EDC the first human to exit the atmosphere using purely human tech[1] in a contraption similar to Megaroc[2] was a small Polish woman test-pilot.

Interesting! Can we read about this brave soul anywhere?

Bernard Quatermass at the B.R.G.
I've never seen the TV Quatermass Experiment, but according to the Wikipaedia article the name of the surviving astronaut was Victor Carroon.

My candidates for the first spacemen are still Captain Andrew "Jet" Morgan (British), Doctor Daniel "Doc" Matthews (Canadian), Stephen "Mitch" Mitchell (Australian) and Lemuel "Lemmy" Barnet (British) from Journey into Space.

Although Journey into Space (September 1953) was 3 years after Dan Dare appeared in the Eagle (April 1950) and a few months behind the Quatermass Experiment (July 1953) one of Charles Chilton's technical advisors was Kenneth Gatland.

Also David Kossoff who was one of the actors that played Lemuel "Lemmy" Barnet would later play Professor Kokintz in the Mouse that Roared and the Mouse in the Moon.

Not surprised you haven't seen it - only the first two episodes were telerecorded (it went out live!) and the quality was judged so poor that they didn't record the rest. The two episodes do still survive and are on the BBC DVD The Quatermass Collection.

Some kind soul has also posted them on youtube

There was a remake on BBC4 in the mid '00s but it was pretty poor as they'd updated it instead of doing it as a 1950s period piece. The remake of A for Andromeda was even worse...
