I have been wondering WI Lyndon Johson did not succeed to the Presidency in 1963.
I can see how LBJ might have decided that he would have more power as majority leader in the Senate than as VP. Remember that in the 1960s there was no strong traditon of a VP getting a crack at the Presidency.
Was there another Southern/ border state Moderate Democrat who would have been tolerable on Civil Rights?
Or was there a candidate who might have enabled JFK to carry states he did not in OTL?
Part of my thinking on this is that I like the idea of some time having a serious 4 way election. Imagine a less skilled President in the summer of 1964 making such a hash of the Mississippii Freedom Democrats as to offend the liberals and left, plus suppose Goldwater lost the California Primary to Rockafeller (which he nearly did)
I imagine moderate a moderate Democrat President, a mainstream to moderate Republican (perhaps more likely Lodge than Rockerfeller, some progresssive and a Goldwater/ George Wallace states rights ticket.
