Who were other possible JFK running mates?

Just to go back to the issue of VPs running for President. Truman and Coolridge did suceed to the Presidency and than run, as did Teddy Roosevelt.

However I think Nixon was the first Vice President (who had not already suceeded to the top job) to be a major party candidate since 1836. (I know the 1860 election was odd)

That depends in part on who wins the nomination.
Definitely ...

If John McCain Wins, The Anti-Evolution Crowd may Very Well Gravitate Around Mike Huckabee, But if Huckabee Wins, The Moderates will Likely Flock to The Democrats with McCain himself Potentially Endorsing their Candidate ...

WOW is Anyone Else as Surprised as I am, Mitt Romney may Actually Wind up Being The Compromise Choice?

Well, Romney has to be feeling good after having won Maine. Maybe when the dus settles, Flip Flop Mitt will indeed be the nominee, only to be trounced in the general election.

Truman's VP had run in 1952, but failed to be nominated.

I've read that this will be the first time since 1928 that an incumbent Pres. or VP hasn't run in a primary, and the first time since 1920 when they haven't even sought a nomination.

2008 is the first time since 1952 that neither an incumbent president or VP hasn't been nominated by a major party going into the election, and is the first time since 1928 that neither the incumbemt President nor the incumbent VP has sought the presidency.

Yeah, Probably ...

So, do you Think McCain will Get a VP Offer from The Democratic Candidate ...

John Kerry did Make that Offer to him Last Time After All!

:p

If LBJ is not JFK's running mate, he isn't going to steal the election in Texas and Nixon is going to win. Which might not have been such a bad thing.

Uh huh. Kennedy won because he won. Texas was won by nearly half a million, and graveyards in West Texas aren't that plentiful; for all that there likely was voter fraud, it's not 400,000+ plus.

Sure Mayor Daley probably stole Illinois for Kennedy—but that alone wouldn't give Nixon the electoral votes he needed to win. You need Texas + Illinois.

Now if you want to argue Nixon won the popular vote, you're on firmer ground. Because Alabama & Georgia voted for individual electors the non-pledged of which promptly voted against Kennedy it seems likely that Nixon did in fact win the popular vote (not even counting voter fraud).

All of that aside, if you think LBJ could produce half a million votes out of thin air in Texas in 1960 I want some of what you're smoking.
