Maybe so, but by then even Burnside could have replaced Sherman & could have repeated the same thing, as there was simply no worthwhile CSA defence at this point in time in this region.

I doubt it. Remember that the locals were astonished at the rate at which Sherman's army could move through forbidding terrain. That's a tribute to his army but also to Sherman's outstanding leadership.

I'm kind of suprised at the results thus far. I knew Sherman would score high as he always does but I thought for sure that Thomas would be behind Grant but here he is level-pegging with Sherman while Grant is falling further behind.

Is Grant really seen as being that inferior to Thomas and Sherman?

We all think we're sorta experts here, which means we all have to come up with something other than the conventional opinion.

at Shilo he was clearly suffering from a sever bout of depression thus preformed poorly.

Sherman was manic, which was why he got surprised. He rejected reports of rebs gathering to his front because he was feeling too happy to believe them.

If you've never read Grant's autobiography, do it. Its a treat. The man really did have a first class temperament.

The Civil War is America's epic partly because of so many genuine personalities on each side.

Thomas was certainly a fine defensive General, though he sure took a long time doing anything on the offensive.

In his one individual command his superiors, Grant and Lincoln, ordered him to attack at a time it was not possible to attack, in the middle of a huge Icestorm, but when he was able to attack his enemy he smashed them to pieces in what was one of the single most complete victories achieved by any general of any army of either side in the Battle of Nashville.

It was only Thomas' decision to pospone attacking while the Icestorm hit that got Lincoln and Grant to bemoan his dawdling and slowess but, regardless of that, the results of the battle that followed surely vindicates Thomas' for his decision.
