So in my TL the Hats' War ends with Russia taking Finland instead of returning much of it to Sweden and opting to have a relative become heir to the Swedish crown. And as Bestuzhev wanted I intend for Peter III to get some early ruler training as King of Sweden. But I wonder should I have Peter become Emperor of Russia, but without Catherine as his wife or should I have Empress Elisabeth overthrown by an Austrian? orchestrated coup and have Ivan VI return to power. And seeing as he is untouched clay I have a lot of options with him. But I want to use Peter III, because he was a good ruler (no matter what vitriol Catherine mass spread against him). So opinions? vote? comments?

Difficult to say. I've just watched a great 8 episode documentary of the Imperial Romanov dynasty and, while I do feel sympathy for poor Ivan VI, I'm not so sure overthrowing Elizabeth would be good for Russia.

EDIT: Ah, what the heck, I vote for Ivan VI. Peter can have Finland and/or Sweden. BTW, how do most people pronounce the name - Eye-van or Eee-van?

EDIT: Dammit! I accidentally voted for Peter when I meant to vote for Ivan! Sorry. Just keep it in mind.

Well, even if Ivan is no good, he has two brothers who he can be replaced with if necessary. Plus, the guy spent his whole life in jail (well, most of it anyway) so it's like saying Louis XVII would make a bad king because of his incarceration at the Temple. Mikhail I and Pyotr II were relatively disinterested rulers, and Fyodor II comparatively weak, but they had "good" ministers serving them. So, as long as Ivan gets competent secretaries/good advisors, Russia should be okay.

Ivan VI. Because let's face it, dude's got it rough. I mean technically so did Peter III, but at least Peter just got killed, Ivan was imprisoned for 20+ years...then killed.

I kind of prefer your original idea, where Peter III becomes King of Sweden and Elizabeth stays on the Russian throne.

Why would the Austrians need to orchestrate a coup? Elizabeth didn't end up being a French puppet, so there's not really any need.

Elizabeth was known for his gallophilia, but the coup could be orchestrated by anyone. Most likely it would be an internal Russian thing with possibly some funding from Austria. And the reason I say Austria is because the three countries that might launch a coup in Russia were France, Austria, and Prussia. France liked Elizabeth and focused their efforts against her austrophilic chancellor. Prussia had a diplomatic coup when Peter was made Elizabeth's heir and he was then married to another German, so they would more likely support having Peter ascend earlier than having Ivan. This leaves Austria behind and considering Ivan's short rule was dominated by Pro Austrian ministers Austria could hope for the same.

Ivan, he got a raw deal. Though when would he be put into power? He was isolated in his room for a long time. That would seriously affect his mental health. It would have to be before he was imprisoned or early. Otherwise you will have another mad Czar, but one that hides in the shadows from his court and has difficulty making speeches.

This would be early in his imprisonment.

This would be early in his imprisonment.

Might work in his favor. He will realize that he isn't always safe and might not take the typical aristocratic attitude, i.e. life is good and always will be no matter what I do. Somewhat similar to Peter the Great, his hardships drove him further.
