Who could replace Montgomery, and others?

What about Hoorocks described by Eisenhower as the outstanding Briotish general under Montgomery

Actually, most of the histories I've read said that particular honor belonged to Simonds. Antony Beevor, in D-Day, even went so far as to call Simonds the best Corps commander the Allies ever had. And Tug of War, written about First Canadian Army's liberation of the Scheldt Estuary north of Antwerp, seemed to be pretty sure about how good he was. And at that point he was in temporary command of the Army.

But that's a bit illogical: you can't put a Canadian in command of a "British" army group. It seems that he'd have been much better at working with Montgomery than Crerar was, though.
