The year is 1865 and a couple enter Ellis Island. William Mason and his wife Janet Mason, neé Bettridge are from New Zealand. They have come to America to seek a better life for their family and want to join Janet’s brother Arthur J.C. Bettridge. They also want a better life for their new child who is yet to be born as Janet is six months pregnant. Although America is in turmoil after it’s civil war and the death of its president the Masons seek to gain admission due to Lincoln’s “Act to Encourage Immigration.” They are admitted and the next day catch a train to Boston where they meet Arthur who takes them to his home in North Bridgewater. Two months later a son is born, they name him William Betts Mason.
