Which Tsars could have ruled Russia?

I created this thread with one main question in mind: Since Russia have so many tsarist claimants, as the main branch of the Romanovs was killed, who are the lesser known candidates who could be restored?

The most common answer of course is Kyril Romanov or his son since they are usually seen as the most successful claimants (and also the kaiserreich mod helped their reputation), but there is also the brothers of Nicholas II, one of which that died after a pulmonary failed during a motorbike ride, and the one who refused to take the throne OTL. There is also grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovic (known for assassinating Rasputin).

So, who come to your mind? Who could have claimed the Romanov throne?

If Whites manage win Russian Civil War and monarchist faction manage win power struggle and stabilise the country (all Whites weren't monarchists) most probable candidates are Kirill Valadimirovich (Nicholas II's cousin) or NII's more distant cousin Nicholas Nichlayevich.

Vladimir Kirillovich might be possible too if restoration is much later than in 1920's.

I would go with Anna Anderson, who claimed to be Grand Duchess Anastasia. MANY people believed her claim. She would have a chance?

1. Russian law of succession allowed only males to throne.
2. Her should give very very strong evidence that she is Anastasia not impostor. And there still would be suspects until DNA tests are developed and when she is proved to be liar then her has abdicate.

So such impostor is totally impossible. There was much stronger candidates to Russian throne.

I wonder I the succession law could be changed to allow females in the future... There is any country with male only succession today?

Surviving/restored Russian empire probably would change its succession on some point so that it would allow women to throne but not sure if it happens yet in 1920's. European monarhcies on that point were mostly quiet exclusive with sex.

By the point DNA testing was developed and widely available, she'd have been on the throne for what? Sixty, seventy years? Presumably successfully enough if she's still ruling at that point. Are you familiar with the concept of "Possession being nine tenths of the law?"

It would be child's play itself by that point to claim that the test is faulty or a deliberate attempt by republican forces to attempt to force the nation's beloved Tsarina off the throne. And to refuse permission for a more "Official" test on the grounds of your 'deeply held religious convictions' which naturally are strongly opposed to disturbing the remains of your deceased family members from their final rest. Either that or you're dead by that point, so what do you care, it's a problem for your children and grandchildren. I suspect that anyone pushing on that point would be found face down in St. Petersburg's harbor shortly afterwards. No one likes anyone who insists on rocking a quite successful boat...

Other branches of the Romanovs would claim to be the "legitimate" candidate for the throne, in place of the imposter, in that case.

Suspects would be much wide at least after bones of Nicholas II and his family are found. Even if tsarina would refuse to give DNA sample (which would be very strange) someone else actual Romanov would give. And then they find out that all NII's children were killed in Yekaterinburg on one fateful night. Other branches would scream her/her successor's abdication. Or this impostor's successor might give DNA sample without knowing that he/she is not actual Romanov. And still Romanov family would urge ousting of this impostor family.

Checkmate for impostors.

The imposter has every right legally to demand that 'their' families bones are buried promptly and not exhumed for DNA testing. Likewise, she has every right to refuse to take part in a DNA test. All it would take would be her saying eight magic words. "I don't think God would approve of this." And that's the end of the matter. What are you going to do, tackle the Tsarina in a hallway and draw a blood sample? For gods sake, you'd be shot dead twenty times over by her bodyguards before you finished, let alone got far enough away to actually run the test! Not to mention that by this point, as mentioned, presumably they have ruled well enough for the last sixty or so years. Years that saw incredible turmoil and strife for Russia, but which she or her line ably steered the nation through. Public Opinion might well end up being "Well... she's not a Romanov... but so what?" At which point the 'legitimate' family is shit out of luck. Heck, she could even marry a 'distant cousin' from the family, so her children WOULD be legitimate!
