Which one?
1. The Korean War ends early as Kim takes over the peninsula, and the South Korean government-in-exile is relocated to Western Honshu. "New Korea" becomes Israel-ified as Korean refugees come to outnumber the Japanese and the once-majority becomes the minority.
2. Post-Cold War politics makes situations turn as South Korea slowly grows pro-China and the US begins to seek North Korea as a possible ally. Things turn quite Reagan-y.
3. After the sinking of Cheonan that spring, South Korean president decides to show Kim who's boss when Yeonpyeong Island is bombed.
4. Korea becomes a republic early and comes to play a larger part in both regional and global diplomacy in this GREAT AND AWESOME KOREA TWELVE REPUBLICS TLIAW *TM*! CHECK IT OUT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! HYPE!!
5. Relations between Korea and Japan turns sour to the point where Korea decides to invade Tsushima in 2005.

1:That would an interesting TL and it could very well have happened. Not sure about the Israel-Palestine like scenario.

2: That I don't see happening except by ASB decree. The U.S. would have overthrown the South Korean govt. or outright invaded to prevent that from happening. North Korea can come into the U.S. camp only if the crazy Kims are overthrown.

3:That could have happened.

4:If they can break away from the Chinese tributary status early enough and somehow keep Japan and Russia out and ally with powerful European power such as Britain or France, then they can do it.

5: That would depend on how heated things get and what would provoke Korea to attempt such a move. Did the JSDF fire on a Korean vessel? How will the U.S. react to it's two Asian allies coming to blows?

I don't know how likely it is, but a timeline where there isn't a 1961 coup and the South Korean democracy succeeds would also be interesting to read about.
