I admit that I have an affinity for the Ancient Mediterranean, and so the timeline ideas I have all focus on that area of the world. I see a lot of the timelines on here are in the Medieval Period or the Renaissance, but some of the most successful timelines I’ve seen in my time lurking posited PODs and Antiquity or Late Antiquity, so... here we go...

God Manifest - The Seleucid Renaissance

Antiochus IV does not die of disease in his eastern campaign against the Parthians. Among the consequences of this, the Maccabean Revolt is crushed, but the fate of the fledgling Parthian Empire also might hang in the balance.

Under the Yoke - An Impotent Rome

The Romans are defeated by the Etruscans at the Battle of Sutrium in 310 BCE. They go on to lose the war against the Etruscans and Samnites, which restricts their power in Italy significantly. If not Rome, who can hold Italy?

Dreams Are For Sleep - The Tale of the Dardanians

Philip II of Macedon is killed in the Battle of Erigon Valley, and Macedonia is rendered a vassal of the expanding Dardanian State. But can the Dardanians maintain their holdings from their isolated, mountainous home?

So it would seem we either like to screw Rome or wank it on this board... lol. I’ve seen a lot of proposals for an “eternal” Rome and also a lot for no Rome at all. The poll will stay open till the day after tomorrow, so... we’ll see where this goes. I will admit that I had already started writing Dreams Are For Sleep, but Under the Yoke might be a little bit easier of a timeline to write given that the record keeping of the Hellenistic Period would have already begun by the time in question.

Do you have something substantial written about the Dardanian TL already? You can work in the Roman TL and later post Dreams Are For Sleep as a short vignette, delving in how the lack of a Macedonia would affect Greece, for example.

Nonetheless, I found all of the three ideas very interesting, had a hard time choosing any of them.

I went to the Library of Congress and spent some hours cataloguing a couple of books about archaeological sites in Ancient Macedonia/Kosovo and also one that detailed every aspect of the Third Sacred War (which would have a very different outcome without Philip there to intervene on behalf of the Amohictyons). I also downloaded a couple of books by Vladimir Orel on the Albanian language to get an idea of Proto-Albanian as there seems to be some scholarly agreement that Albanians likely migrated from Kosovo (which corresponds to Ancient Dardania). I was going to head down to the Library of Congress on Friday to check out a book about Albanian Folklore to be able to “reconstruct” Dardanian religion. Just stuff like that... lol.

I could still of course do something with the Dardanians in either of these other timelines. But, what you guys want to see here matters. I wouldn’t want to write a timeline that would only be read by a handful of people ;)

So, given the lead that God Manifest has, I would be surprised if either of the others win. I honestly didn’t expect that - I didn’t realize there was so many philhellenes on here ;)

That said, there is still the remainder of the day to vote on this!

Wow... I had a great day today! Ah! I love having a day this amazing at work, I really do. Anyways...

So, democracy has spoken! Somehow this reminds me of election night last year - we all knew what the result was before The final tally was over. Lol. Voting will continue until tomorrow morning, but I’m pretty sure we’re going for God Manifest, which works out fine.

Brainstorming on that will be in here...

In the meantime, I will have to check what the Library of Congress has for reading on the Seleucids, and I will spend the next couple of days cataloguing those books on my phone so that I can have the information on hand when needed.
