Which post-colonial countries could be sustainably bigger?

What nations could have avoided partition or formed ahistorical federations, and become bigger than OTL but not too big that would lead to problems?

This is what I have in mind:

Sustainable
India-Pakistan-Bangladesh (non-partitioned India)
Indonesia-Malaysia federated state

Unsustainable
French West Africa as one country

Think Draka- aside from the Draka, you have a bunch of OTL nations becoming bigger for no reason like Gran Colombia surviving. Or think Kaiserreich where Argentina for some reason swallows up Uruguay. Except I expect actual reasons for why any proposed nations might be bigger.

A united former French Indochina, though it may have serious problems (I can see Vietnamese dominance being opposed by Cambodians and Laotians).

A larger Nigeria as OTL Nigeria could expand due to unstable countries on its borders I can see a Greater Nigeria.

Also include East Papua into the greater Indonesian state.

For sure. It would be immediately seen as a reincarnation of pre-colonial empires and neighboring powers will have a huge incentive to promote Laos and Khmer nationalism.

More recently there are interminable troubles in the former Soviet Union. Isn't hard to see Kazakhstan claiming a right to Kyrgyzstan, or Tajikistan claiming a right to more of the Ferghana Valley, or OTL Armenia claiming a right to other territories.

A different division of Sudan (with what is now South Sudan permanently split off) could have resulted in an Independent Egypt including the predominately Arab North.

Well, Tajikistan actually claims more of Ferghana OTL, and Armenian claims have caused bloody wars in early nineties, that Armenia basically won. Search for Nagorno-Karabakh on Google. (Wikipedia entry should be among the first three results).

Why are you people forgetting the Americas?

-U.S. + Canada
-Gran Colombia
-Peru-Bolivian Confederation
-Mexican Empire (Mexico + Central America)

Possible, but hard. Most of politically active North Sudanese were quite opposed to a union with Egypt OTL. You's need an earlier POD for that. (before 1919 would be fine, before 1881 easier).

So far back they aren't living under dirrect legacies of colonialism except the blacks and natives?

On that same logic as you: United States of South America and Central American Republic. And Haiti controlling all of hispanola.

South Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), North Rhodesia (Zambia) and Nysaland (Malawi) retain their 1950s union or maybe only the Rhodesia's unite as the colonist light Nysaland was unwanted by the white minorities. A big Rhodesia might help avoid the Bush Wars and earlier black majority rule or the copper wealth of the North might just let them last longer and ZANU-PF style cruelty rule over a larger area in the end.

Australia if we hd kept Papua New Guinea and Timor. We also may have had New Zealand and The rest of Papua if an Aussie-wank had happened

Could any of the United Arab Republic projects actually have worked?
In OTL? They nearly expanded from Syria to Iraq and from Egypt to Libya at different points. Here's the maximum Pan-Arab state I could see with a POD after WWII:

If Israel is in the way I think that it would divide two states. The Maghreb could become one state as well (Libya could go into Egypt or the Maghreb).

All the Central Asian republics that were in the USSR (but not including Russia).

Early 60s: South Africa absorbs Southwest Africa, Mozambique, Angola and Southern Rhodesia. Maybe even parts of the Congo. Ultimately it will be unsustainable.
