In anticipation of Crusader Kings 2 "Old Gods" expansion I got a bit of dilemma.

On the one side you have a mid 9th century Byzzies with smaller territory than in pre Manzikert years, surrounded by First Bulgarian Empire and Caliphate of the Abbasids.

And in the other period I'm interested in is directly is 100 years later, Manzikert, Seljuks and all that jazz. Another threat would be the Normans in recently conquered Sicily, although smaller. And the Danube frontier somewhat stabilized.

So, on the one side you have two strong enemies, luckily one is decentralized and fragmenting Islamic superpower of the age, but on the other hand you have a state of Seljuks ruled by a military genius of the age Arp Arslan.

What say you ?
