This is what I have to work with.

Civ III Complete (Already have four but it works only on and off)

Civ IV Warlords (In hopes of provoking Civ into working again)

C&C 3 (Have Generals, don't know if it is worth it)

Age of Empires II Gold (Have 3 for my PC)

What exactly is the problem that you're having with Civ4?

And I highly recommend getting the BTS expansion. You should make sure that you can get Civ4 to reliably work before you get it.

I haven't played Civ3, but popular sentiment seems to be that Civ2 was the pinnacle of the series, at least if you don't like what they did with Civ4. With Civ4, they rebuilt the Civ game engine from the ground up, so the rules of the game are significantly different (not to the point of making it unrecognizably different, though). So, getting Civ3 might be a step back.

First off I have a Mac, so I can't get BTS, believe me I would.

Whenever I play it it works for about a month perfectly. Then starts crashing. Then I uninstall it a couple of times and wait a while(a couple weeks) then install it again it works.

In my Opinion Civ 3 was actually one of the better ones. Having attempted to play Civ 2 but could not stand the graphics. If it worked Civ 4 would probably be my favorite game, I might even be playing it right now.

That is what several of my friends have advised. But honestly I think I'm leaning towards Civ 3, the more I think about it.
Sorry, but IMO Civ3 was the weakest of the entire series. Total Democracy-wank with getting cities through cultural domiance inspired revolts way to easy. Also some other factors i cannot really recall ATM killed the fun for me.
My recommendation would be for you to post a detailed description of your CIV4 problem on some CIV4 fansite. Sometimes you can get help for the weirdest things just by asking the right experts on the internet.
As for what to buy instead of Civ3 i'd recommend Hearts of Iron 2 or Victoria.

I understand what your saying about Civ 3, but that honestly isn't that much of a problem for me. As to the Paradox games I have Victoria but didn't really like Hearts of Iron.

Thanks, I think I will post my Civ 4 problem. Even though I've only gotten to play Civ 4 for about a month and a half it has still been played just as much if not more then any other game I have.

For me, Civ 2 was the high point of that series, although Call to Power had some interesting if poorly implemented ideas. Didn't like where it went with Civ3 and my experience of Civ4 was that it was essentially the same thing, again.

While Age of Kings is indeed an excellent game, it's quite thoroughly dated now - if you dislike Civ2 based on looks then you might have issues there.

I found C&C3 and the expansion pack to be good fun games - the single-player campaigns were entertaining and of a good length, and the cinematics were entertaining.

If you haven't played Age of Empires 2 (especially with the expansion) by this point, there is something wrong with you.

Something wrong that can only be put right by playing Age of Empires 2.

Nope. Alpha Centauri is the best of the series. If not for the lack of human opponents and an AI that cannot win once a player figures out the use of supply crawlers, I would still be playing it now instead of Civ 4. It's the only game in the series thus far that allows many different paradigms of play, that plays differently for each faction, but remains effective for all. And it definitely looks better than Civ2, though probably not good enough for modern tastes.

Perhaps consider playing Alpha Centauri - it is a turn based strategy game in the vein of Civ - and was designed in part by the same team.

It picks up at the end of Civ 2, or really any Civ game with the Space Race victory.

For my money Alpha Centauri game is one of the better out there, despite being 10 years old. You should be able to pick up a copy easily for about for cheap as they have recently re-released it

Hopefully some day they will re-release the expansion for it...
