yes, and I don't think I said anything opposite of what you did. I merely added that the natives were looking to exterminate other natives, too. they were all to willing to use the Europeans to help them settle scores.

Of all those listed, only one still has coast to coast crown territory on the American mainland, that of the Commonwealth realm Canada. While you'll find the British sovereign's image on the currency and throughout many public and private institutions in Canada today, I doubt you'll see official images of Felipe VI of Spain or the President's of France or Portugal anywhere outside of their few Caribbean territories and French Guiana.

For staying power, it has to be the British.

Don't go there. Just don't.:(

No, if he has proof, I'd be curious to see it.

No point in silencing it - the only reason I can see not to give at least a read is that it isn't obviously part of the focus of the thread.

However, if part of it is about Europeans playing divide and conquer, then that IS relevant to the thread.

We would have to define what "best" means in terms of legacy. Spontaneously I'd go with the French, if the criterium is relatively little damage to native cultures. Though I'm not sure how much of this is due to being out-competed by other powers. Somehow, I can't really imagine a French "Ėtats-Unis". Rather a few Quebecs and lots of territories where they are ultimately overthrown and chased away, pieds-noirs style.

Given this criteria, why would any European country make the investment in gold and people to establish a colony?

Seems anachronistic.
