I've been considering different butterflies that may occur in a CSA victory TL I'm working on, including the effects it may have with the OTL purchase of Alaska by the USA. In order to help me choose a good idea please tell me which TL idea do you prefer.

1. The USA purchases Alaska and successfully annexes British Columbia.
2. Russia fails to sell Alaska, discovers its mineral wealth, and improves its infrastructure with the resources.
3. Option two + Britain and Russia go to war ending up with Alaska being added to Canada as a territory and increases its power.
4. Other - explain

Spain does not pull a South Carolina in the Northwest and sends missionaries and soldiers up there early (1700s). Eventually they have an empire extending from Alaska to Puenta Arenas. When the Mexicans rebel, Spanish loyalists escape north and prevent the Mexicans from advancing farther then Oregon. So by the US Civil War, Oregon to ALaska is SPanish. ALso this requires a serious divergence like 1500 or something. Once I get time to work on my TL, I could lay the seeds for this.

Kinda depends on how much you're relying on plausibility, TBH. Options 1 & 3 are a bit cliche, true, but both of these aren't all that hard to obtain, especially not number 1. 2, however, may require outright suspension of disbelief depending on the POD, and your desired outcome. If you're looking for Alaska as an integral part of Russia, If it's way back, by say ~1780 or so, you *might* be able to pull it off believably, but just barely. Anything after, say, 1840-50 in that regard, however, is going to be incredibly tough to do even partly plausibly.

However, though, things become a little less difficult if you're just looking to build a rough Puerto Rico or Philippines analogue, especially with an earlier POD; Russia won't have to devote quite as many resources to keeping the place up and when the minerals do get discovered, it provides a boost to both Russia and it's little Alaskan protectorate. But then again, there's always the risk that Alaska may still feel neglected enough, and may eventually break away anyhow, especially in the event of any serious trouble in Russia itself.

#4- Alaska, British Columbia & Washington State (potentially along with Oregon, if the Pacific US state of Jefferson is established ITTL) break away to form the Pacific Republic of Cascadia. (and as a added benefit, this might also lend extra credence to the notion that the CSA may be capable of competing with the USA ITTL)

#4 Britain keeps the entire Oregon territory during the war of 1812, and takes Alaska off Russia during the Crimean war, all of which join Canada later on.

4. The U.S. northwest is the Old Northwest along the Great Lakes, as the U.S buys New Orleans and the area around the Mississippi Delta in 1803. This would make for an interesting intellectual exercise.

4 - Britain accepts Russia' proposal of purchasing Alaska in the first place (Britain was offered before the USA)

What year was that?

Both American and Britain were approached by Russia in the sale of Alaska following the Crimean War, so after 1856. Britain immediately showed little/no interest in purchasing it so they ended up offering it solely to the USA.
