Where the River Flows: The Story of Misia: A Native American Superpower

So much of political and historical discourse is “if only the right people would rule”. India went from oppressive sultanates to British rule to shitty half-assed socialism to Hindu nationalism. The Israeli government has a shoddy human rights record to say the least, but many also assume if only Israel lost everyone would live peacefully under Arab rule. Chinese peasants under the Kuomintang may long for Maoist rule, and many of those stuck under the Tsars longed for the Soviet rule that would oppress them as well.

That applies in this TL too. The Meshica Christians of this TL would probably kill to have Spain conquer them. The slaves who built the Eriron Canal probably wish Haudenosaunia was ruled by the English instead. The Taino have been displaced by the Spanish, but can you imagine if the Spanish were in turn displaced by the Taino?
That just means popular historiography and depictions will be less hagiographic and more similar to Japanese Taiga dramas.

I sure would love to see the Unbiased History episode on him if there was one
Honestly ITTL I might cosplay the guy instead of Calígula for Halloween

To be honest, I'm far more interested with post-Manawesquah era palace intrigue and how his new retainers' wealth and prestige compared against each other.

Alternatively, I am also interested about exaggerated romances about the Columbian Wars and how it and its elements differed from Chinese wire fu dramas and Japanese Jidaigeki.

Utopia of course
*Insert Pacifist Taino Federation with space ships*
Of course, no one's saying that it's unachievable. They just need to enact [venganza] and spill two million lives the same way how the Is*panoles did it.

May I ask you what's the Taino for revenge again?

You can bet I'd do that
But honestly his story is pretty tragic, my props to you for that
Guy was a shy but highly talented kid who studied a lot, actually opposed harems, trusted his friends, believed the "liberal" ideals of the Great House and supported peace with his neighbours
What he got? Was bullied his entire childhood, his dear sibling die, his father died and he wasnt even allowed to consider waging war against the murderers
Then he tried to keep the peace anyways only for the neighbours to take advantage of that and keep raiding him while one of his best friends sleept with his dear wife
Yeah I can see how that broke the camels back
Then to see that same sweet kid become the biggest bully of all, a warmongering tyrant who killed his wife and tortured his friend into commiting suicide, brought back the harem with epic proportions as a tool of humiliation and his ideals led to the enslavement of millions...
Yeah it's pretty tearjerking, I feel a lot for the guy
Yet the "Mad Bear" still is the one who brought his nation to modernity and made it what it is, for better or worse, having a legacy comparable to that of Washington or Meiji
And that's one chapter

You did a fantastical job here my dude

Also while I did brought up Caligula for the memes, his story is in some ways similar
He was a very promising kid, "Caligula" was a sweet pet name the legions gave, the people loved the boy
And honestly he did much for Rome, from canals to annexing Mauritania to ensure the supply of grain to Rome to making the preparations for the conquest of Britannia in order to end the britonic raids in Gaul
But what happened to him? Oh nothing! He just had his brain filled with lead and atempts made on his life more times than one can count, mostly with poison, giving him Stalin levels of crazy and when you think things couldnt be any worse for the kid who has too much power his beloved sister dies, who also happens to be his lover(is incest a sign he already got the crazy? Who knows) so thats a double critical hit on his little head
Bam! We got the Caligula we all know and love
Thats not to say I excuse his actions or think he couldnt have choose to be any different, but a lot of these things did influence who he became much like what happened to our boi Maquah made who he is as much as his own bad choices and maybe if it didnt happen someone like Caligula might as well have been know as "Julius Caesar II"(since that was his actual name) for legitely ruling well rather than "Little Boots the crazy"

All in all, great writing

Well, i was gonna write the next update today, but looks like I came down with a fever from my booster.
Guess that’s karma for what I as the author did to that poor eunuch.

Anyway in the meantime here’s a meme

Anyway I might make more memes in my unfocused state, but in the meantime I encourage fans of the TL to make some of their own. Kinda curious to see what sticks with people.

I cant photo edit on my phone but if I could I would have a doge dressed like Maquah bonking the other (eunuch)doge for being horny with his wife

Enjoying the story, but the first paragraph is pretty offensive and borderline racist

That wasn’t the intention if it came off that way. Obviously the British were worse than the native Indian regimes. I suppose I could have used more negative adjectives to describe them there. I apologize for how I phrased that, and British India definitely isn’t the best example given how literally no one in India longs for British India.

I'm British, but I don't really care how we are described, we were big enough and bad enough to have earned it and mostly are in denial of that.
I was more concerned about the post indian independence comments and also the references to Israel / Arab countries

Indian independence was clearly a positive for the population, but India’s attempts at socialism were a failure, and Hindu nationalism isn’t exactly great for the Muslim population. I can see how the comment on “shitty half-assed socialism” reads as demeaning though.

As for Israel/Palestine it’s not something I want to get into now since this isn’t in chat, but
irl I’m a pretty vocal critic of the actions of Israel’s occupation and settlement of Palestinian territory as well as their overall treatment of Arabs within their proper territory, as well as their historic treatment especially during the Nakba. That being said, there is also seemingly a huge number of people have gotten behind what essentially amounts to irredentist Palestinian nationalism, which would basically lead to the same things happening to the local Jewish population as during the mandate period when they were subject to a number of pogroms such as those in Jerusalem, Hebron, and Safed, as well as in other Arab countries where they were heavily persecuted or even directly forced to flee. I am pretty vocally anti-apartheid, and I actually spend a lot of time in my day to day internet activities getting into online arguments with Jewish nationalists, but I think there’s also the reality that a complete Palestinian victory would almost inevitably end in more oppression, which is why I tend to advocate either for two-states or binationalism. While obviously the power dynamic is skewed towards Israel, and the Israeli government is using that for some horrid shit, it’s also true that a reversal of the dynamic where the Israelis were entirely defeated would also be awful given the historic relationships and current prevailing attitudes in the region.

Huh you know if the Misia decide to dip their hand in slavery in their Southern land. I can see some people like the Seminole forming in Florida made up of hiding Floridian Christians and run away slaves or maroons.

Considering that the labour force still haven't recovered to pre-Columbian levels, and the years of steel-plough monoculture still being two centuries away, that scenario can be repeated even up north of Little Egypt, on all the four corners of the empire.

And by the time that the Misian native population do recover and demand abolition, a good part of them more likely than not to be subjected to a back-to-Africa/expulsion initiative, LTTW's Empire of North America-style.

An excellent chapter. I like that these native empires have their own share of dark sides and complex figures.

Now, one question here: how similar is he to Ivan the Terrible?
At least so far, not even close. He has not yet absolutely razed one of the most culturally significant cities in his own empire, so thoroughly destroying the cradle of Misian democracy that the notion of a functional democracy in Misia in the 21st century still seems like it might require the intervention of ASBs. He has not commenced genocide against the plains nomads to the point that several languages are now gone entirely. He has not beat any blood relatives to death in a fit of rage.

but India’s attempts at socialism were a failure
In all fairness, all attempts at socialism have insofar been failures to one extent or another. It's almost like it's a terrible idea which never works. If anything, half-assing it is likely to lead to a much smaller problems than going full-bore.
