Where does the Union Capital go?

South successfully wins independence. they gent Kentucky and Maryland, including Washington DC. Where exactly does the Union's capital go?
Most people seem to believe that Philadelphia or New York, but, could they have a temporary capital in these cities, but have a new capital built somewhere around the great lakes?

i don't think the south could get Maryland, Kentucky, or even West Virginia. But even if DC remains the de-jure capital, I'd wager Philadelphia becomes the de-facto, just based on its connected history with American government, and the fact New York can be blockaded by a foreign navy.

Its not a Sealion to have the South win but it gets too ASB if they get D.C. and Maryland. Even if they got Maryland, D.C. would somehow remain in Union hands. There not about to give away the Capital slaved upon for decades. However, assuming Lincoln goes crazy and gives the capital away, my guess is that Philadelphia would be named as a temporary capital and then they would build a new D.C. somewhere.

Well if kentucky AND maryland are out, that probably means Virginia remains intact as well...its hard to keep Philadelphia as more than a temporary Capital.... If Maryland stays in then temporary would probably become permanent through inertia. If i had to move it... Ft. Wayne or perhaps South Bend, probably renamed of course.. New Columbia.

Not Philadelphia. It's only 41 miles from the Maryland border that's now hostile. I'd say Columbus, maybe, or at least Pittsburgh.

The only way that happens is an outright Confederate military victory. A stalemate would not do it, nor would the Union make such concessions in a negotiated peace (if you can even imagine Lincoln agreeing to that). So if it happens, the new Union capital might be wherever the conquering Confederates tell them to put it.
