99 Red Balloons
On the 6th of March 1984 East German Radar detected unidentified object on it's screens. It later turned out there was a bug in the system but not before a order to send aircraft to find the object was called. West German fighters were sent up to intercepted the incoming aircraft heading towards there border. During the dogfight 4 fighters from the East German and West German air forces were shot down before the East German fighters were recalled. The incident sparked outrage in East and West Germany as each tried to explain to the other. The incident troubled NATO.The East Germans could have invaded West Germany which would be backed by Soviets. Determined to to stop in there eyes Communist aggression NATO transferred a number of forces to West Germany. In Britain any forces not in Germany were transferred North while schools were shut and police men were given guns.So on 2nd April 1984 the USSR worried by NATO forces created a declaration of war and faxed to to all NATO members. World War 3 had began.
Franz Wulf had just finished his memoirs. During World War 2 he had been in Waffen SS. After the war married Maria and had Karl. Because he had been in Waffen SS he wasn't given a pension so he started writing novels to earn money. Now it was 1984 and son was working in Britain in a city called Nottingham and wife had heart attack 4 years ago. He often talked to his son over the phone and he was expecting now. On cue the phone rang and he answered. "Hello Karl how are you" he went as slowly went into the lounge."Hello Papa I am fine but you should see the news" his son went. As he heard what his son had said he switch on the TV. He put on the news to find the anchorman lips trembling as he went "Two hours ago the USSR faxed a message to all NATO members. The message said that they were declaring war on them. As so Soviet and NVA troops have crossed the border. We are now at war with USSR."As if on cue Tank rolled past Franz could only utter one word. "Scheisse."
Arthur Lankins had set up camp with other members of his regiment and battalion of troops from Bundeswher. Arthur was no strange to combat as in 1982 he and fellow Royal Marines saw combat against Argentinean forces. Now he was with them again except this time the stakes were higher. While the officers were waiting for orders from GHQ Arthur introduced himself to Herschel Schmidt. Both were the same age and both were career soldiers and both were translators. While they talked in the some German listening to some music. When Arthur asked what it was Herschel replied "99 Red Balloons" A second later a shell screeched down hitting the group listening to radio. As more shells came Arthur and Herschel jumped into a shell hole. Bombardment was not helped by the radio flying through air still playing music with owners hand still attached to it.
Tom McLeod was preparing his house to what was to come Glasgow. He had chosen his cellar as a fallout shelter and put all the essentials inside. His wife had quit her job to help him and son help put food and bottles of water inside. Tom knew that when the nukes fell he would be ready.
John Sherwood's life had not been easy for the past few years. First his girlfriend had left him. Second he only barely stayed as one of Nottingham's Labour councilors and last the USSR had declared war on NATO.The meeting was all about what would happen if nukes fell on Britain. The only good point for him was that Margret Thatcher would stay in London to run the government. John had to meet the Chief of Nottingham's Police to discuss how the Police were keeping law and order. The Chief told him that if there was trouble then the ringleaders will hung. John walked back to his house noticing that soldiers were stationed outside the council building. They started putting up Machine emplacements and one of the men was asking a man in armored car for instructions.John looked at the sky and concluded that a storm was brewing.
