I believe it was during the later part of his first term that the break-in occurred. Precisely when Nixon know that that particular illegal activity had happened?
Nixon lied so much about that issue that probably only he and his cronies actually knew. I believe he pretty much as informed immediately after the "plumbers" were arrested in the Watergate building (not minutes later...but a few hours or a day or two later when Haldeman and the rest realized just how deep a pile of goo they were in).

IMO, Nixon had a pretty good idea before hand. My picture of Nixon is a deeply paranoid person who saw himself as above the law. He knew he had people breaking laws to help his political interest, and he knew breakins and other serious felonies were involved. He probably did not know of the exact operation before hand, all the dirty little details, but within 48 hours, I am sure he knew he had a problem.

That's my read on him too, his infamous quote from the Frost/Nixon interview (said on my birthday in fact :p) pretty much validates to me he knew at least the broad strokes of what was going on and probably found out about the "plumbers" within 48 hours of the break-in.

The quote for those unfamiliar:

Richard M. Nixon 5.19.1977 said:
Well, when the president does it, that means it is not illegal

He helped set it up; he was the one who insisted on using Cuban exile cronies against the wishes of Hunt and Liddy, who wanted only professionals; (ex)FBI, CIA, SS.
