When did Europeans and Africans begin to outnumber Natives in what is now the USA?

By 1800, there were very clearly many times more Europeans and than in native societies. But as late as 1700, this wasn't the case; at the time, the population of the English colonies was half the native population of just California alone.

So when in the 18th century did the great reversal occur?

Where is this estimate from - never heard it before.
The population of the colonies in 1700 is conventionally around a quarter million, maybe a little more.

The Californian population prior to the Spanish invasion of Alta California is generally estimated to be around 400,000. It's also thought that at least some European diseases affected California before the Europeans themselves did, so it's probable that in 1700 the Native Californians numbered more than 500,000.
