What's the BEST TL you can imagine?

Wallace was an authoritarian leftist.

You did get half of this right, he was indeed an authoritarian. He was anything BUT leftist, however(as in, Wallace wasn't leftist at all.)

That's right SOF remember that only LIBERALS do BAD things COnservatives all only do GOOD things and if a COnsevative does a bad thing, then they were a secret liberal.

Lather, rinse repeat.

It seems to be a common attitude in some areas of this country, sadly. :( (P.S. good job with the sarcasm. :D)

Reminds me of the Anthropic Principle a little bit.

Somewhat, although that would suggest the implication runs the other way. The universe has to exsit just the right way for me to exsit, rather than my exsitance is the result of the universe evolving in a particular manner.

i.e. if the universe couldn't support life/my life then I wouldn't be there to observe it. Universe => Life

Rather than;

I observe the universe/my life, therefore the universe must have these parameters. Life => Universe

Another TL 'me' (not me, just a randomer saying the same thing) would say exactly the same thing. Rather than he wouldn't. If that makes sense...?

I would love to read a timeline where Hillary Clinton runs for President in 2004. Unfortunately when hcallega attempted this everyone shot down his idea.

Sarcasm is just one of the many services I offer.

Hmmm....

I don't know how to make this plausible, but as a critical Soviet Union apologist, I love the idea of a world in which the Moscow was given a free hand in Western Asia (as I feel that without foreign intervention, any outcome but total Soviet victory in Afghanistan is ABS). I know getting to this sort of point is ABS, a world where socialism and capitalism co-exist and fluctuate between light and moderate tensions is far better than what we have today. If you're a Pakistani woman or an Afghan woman, you especially benefit from this scenario. :)

The Russian Republic manages to hang on largely due to the massively successful Kerensky offensive. Germany surrenders six months earlier, without the US joining the war (this has the added effect of keeping the American Socialist Party alive, as Wilson has no good excuse to destroy it). The Bolshevik Party withers rapidly as the Republic's star waxes. The Treaty of Versailles is less harsh: however, the Entente did actually capture significant swathes of Germany and defeated the Germans in open battle, leading to no 'stab-in-the-back' myth. Hungary remains largely intact, while the Balkan states join into a loose confederation of monarchies rather than a centralized state. Turkey survives as per OTL, secretly supported by a more anti-colonialist US. The Russian Republic, though at first an illiberal state, returns a large Menshevik majority in 1920, who begin peacefully modernizing Russia and turning it into a liberal state. Poland, unfortunately, remains split between Germany and Russia, but the Poles are treated quite a bit better and there isn't as much revanchist animosity in the area. The Spanish Republic survives and prospers. The Russians help prop up independent states in Xinjiang and Tibet, but also help China unify by sponsoring a much more liberal Kuomintang. Korea eventually becomes independent, as does Taiwan, with Russia, China, and the USA pressuring Japan. The Phillipines and other American colonies become part of an American Commonwealth, with common defense provisions and an economic free trade zone. Due to benevolent American influence, many American nations develop into true liberal republics. Britain, ironically far more weakened by the war, releases its colonies earlier; India is not partitioned, leading to a massive, wealthy, Dominion of India stretching from Burma to Pakistan. This India, too, becomes a liberal democracy, as do Germany and Italy after some rough times. By 1950, all of mainland Europe is made up of liberal democracies. Ireland, including the north, leaves Britain peacefully. Apartheid ends much earlier due to global pressure, as does segragation in the US (this last largely due to the Socialist party). Fascism never develops, Mussolini becoming an influential socialist. The NSDAP rapidly withers after a failed putsch and the sudden, surprising deaths of Hitler, Himmler, and Goering. African colonies are invested in heavily and prepared for independence by the formerly imperialist nations, leading to a somewhat wealthier, far stabler and more democratic Africa. The Congo looks set to become the next Great Power. By 1970, South America, barring Peru and Venezuela, are liberal democracies, as are all of the Central American states. Vietnam peacefully becomes independent as a mildly leftist democracy, as do Indonesia and Malaysia. By the modern age, the excesses of colonialism and war have been repaired and have withered away almost entirely. The world is filled with liberal, largely green democracies. The world population is quite a bit lower--5 billion or so-- due to much earlier development in OTL's Third World. Society is open and liberal, not allowing for racism and prejudice. The four great democracies--America, Russia, China, and India--all cooperate to land a multinational team on the moon in 1964, with multinational bases on the moon by 1990. The first man on Mars, in 2010, is actually an African woman from the DRC. By 2012, mankind looks set to colonize the solar system peacefully, which may, eventually, lead to Earth's unification.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the World Of Democracy TL, the most liberal utopia you can find. It's probably ASB. :(

JFK survives, is re-elected, and pulls out of Vietnam before it gets too hot. Downside to this is that Kennedy would likely not have been able to get the civil rights and voting rights acts passed the way Johnson did.

Realistically, race riots get worse in the 60's before Congress finally realizes a civil rights/voting rights bill is a must and both pass in 1967 or so. Nixon is elected in '68 over Hubert Humphrey due to southern whites being angry at the democratic party for passing the civil rights act and serves a largely uneventful, though successful two terms as President without watergate in a much less divided America than OTL.

Robert Kennedy defeats Ronald Reagan in 1976 and begins the process of mending fences with the south with help from Jimmy Carter as Vice President. The democrats manage to get national health care through Congress, though narrowly, and Bobby manages to avoid the energy crisis and high inflation (how I'm not sure, but this is best TL we can imagine, right? :D) and is re-elected in a landslide in '80 over former Vice President Spiro Agnew. During the 80's the economy booms and American manufacturing begins to make a big comeback after several down years due to incentives put in place by RFK. The unions remain strong and the American industrial infrastructure also remains strong.

In 1984 George Bush narrowly defeats Vice President Jimmy Carter and serves two terms as a relatively popular President, particularly after the U.S. victory in the Gulf War. In 1992 Bill Clinton is elected President after defeating Kansas Senator Bob Dole, but with the economy suffering during his term, he loses re-election in '96 to popular General Colin Powell, who becomes America's first black President. Under Powell's leadership, the military and intelligence community is streamlined and becomes better able to defend against terrorist attacks. In 1998, Powell announces that the U.S. has conducted a raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. Powell is re-elected in a landslide in 2000 over Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd amid an era of peace and prosperity.

In 2004 with the economy solid and the nation at peace, voters opt to stick with the GOP and John McCain is elected President over Vermont Governor Howard Dean in the second consecutive republican landslide. McCain begins several initiatives to address global warming and continues others that have been active since the 2nd Kennedy administration. In 2008 McCain is re-elected over former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. The remainder of his Presidency is relatively quiet.

2012 will see the democrats run popular Illinois Senator Barack Obama against McCain Vice President Mitt Romney. Currently, Obama leads in most polls as voters have expressed some fatigue with republican control of the White House.

It may not be, with the right PODs. After all, if Robert Sobel could get away with Kramer Associates, and Jared with considering liberal drug policy in an *America in which according to normal logic, drugs should be feared by the elite and should be illegal at least in the old South and some other areas if not the whole damn nation, then I don't see how people could reasonably complain about a concept like yours, especially if well-written.

She could be better off, if she can outrun the Soviet Gunships that lay waste to her village. Oy, when will people stop using womens rights as an excuse to kill Muslims?

Even though this is pre-1900 and ASB, have a Milton Friedman analouge appear in the late 19th century who has a popular magum opus in support of free trade, a free market aswell as firmly defining Liberalism in the classic, Enlightenment sense of the word published c.1890's aswell as some how have the eugenics movement butterflied away. Therefore, we have no 'Progressive' era and hence no move to Big, all encompassing Government and aswell as at least the worst scions of Eugenicist and Scientific Racist thought butterflied away. By the beggining of the 20th century, much is the same except for above mentioned changes.

After this, somehow have somthing resembeling the Three Emperors Alliance (Germany, AH, Russia) come to pass with the addition of the Ottomans (somehow?), which, in the ensuing WWI analouge, is completedly and utterly destroyed by an alliance of Britain, France, the US, Italy, Japan etc, with Germany being broken up into a modern day recreation of the old German Confederation (including Austria), the old AH empire split along reasonable ethnic lines and the Ottomans divvied up into directly ruled colonies instead of mandates (with the provision for a Jewish State in the levant to compose of all modern day Israel + Palestinian territories with palestinians being given the choice of staying or moving to Transjordan) aswell as an independent Kurdish State (which is a British protectorate). The Russian Empire in the meanwhile is also split along ethnic lines, with a large, democratic, stable Poland to serve as both a buffer to any future Russian interests in Europe and a leader of the new independent states of central and eastern Europe. The Central Asian territories are spun off as independent states under British protection. While Russia's Pacific coast is divvied up between Japan and an Anglo-American-Canadian co-dependency (with the intention of later being added to Canada :D).

After this war, there is no depression analouge and the world settles in for a long period of peace and prosperity. The Japanese eventualy avoid the turn to militralism experianced IOTL while the western economies continue to grow and expand. Much investment is pumped into the colonial empires aswell as modernising industry at home so in time, Britain, which is at the helm of an EU like super commonwealth dealie and still an economic and cultural superpower and the US effectivly rule the world jointly at the head of a large and prosperous Anglosphere.

Oh yeah, and weed is legal :D

You think so (sorry about all the grammar and spelling mistakes in the original post, by the way--I was doing it from my phone, with a hangover)? I haven't had much inspiration for my other TL lately, so I might give this one a whirl if there's interest.
