I would say 1952 with the Korean War raging and Stalin becoming increasing demented and unstable to the extent where people really started to really believe he was going to start another world war or another mass killing of millions upon millions in Eastern Europe. It was also an election year so the fear card was being played up big time for votes.

I would say either 1950 or 1951, this was the time of the Alger Hiss case and the beginning of the Rosenberg Trial, both high profile cases related to communism in the U.S., plus the Korean war and the investigations into the State Department and the Army
