What would the Philippines be called if spain never conquered them?

I think that would depend hugely on whether there's an alternate colonial power (and who it is), an indigenous unified state, or an assortment of smaller indigenous states.

What do you have in mind?

i've been trying to figure out some alternate names for the Philippines myself. the one that i've come to like the most is "San Lázaro", still a Spanish name but here as an extrapolation of its initial discovery where the name of a single part of it is later given to the whole country, given by Magellan because he found on St. Lazarus' feast day. i figured that the eventual demonym of this would be "Lazaronian".

here's the Wiki page on names of the Philippines if y'all want to get some other ideas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_the_Philippines

It could probably be part of the Portuguese Empire if they are interested. It depends on who is ruling Portugal around the time the Portuguese discover the islands, maybe either Afonsinas, Sebastianinas, or to quote @ramones1986 from an earlier, similar thread, "Somos Manuelinhas, né?"

I don't think Portugal alone can conquer all of the Philippines, they don't have a power to fight the Bruneians compared to the Spanish, the only area that they can conquer is Northern Luzon which is accessible to them - Visayas is covered by Palawan which is under Bruneian Suzerainty.

Perhaps the archipelago would have a Chinese name if they remain politically disunited? If alt-Portugal and alt-Brunei are not able to conquer the whole archipelago, they may not feel the need to give it a unified name as this might imply they 'failed' in their conquests, but Chinese merchants would have no such point of pride and would want a common name for the islands for their maps and directions.

Possible names: Pirate Islands (if Chinese pirates take shelter there), Land of Wood and Honey (two commodities Chinese traders sought), Gold Mountain (if urban myths about Philippino wealth still develop ITTL).

If they are conquered by an European kingdom, they will adapt the name of the monarch/dynasty/prince of the moment.

It could be called "Barangay", like what happened with Canada.

If the archipelago is united under a single philippine ruler, it may be named after the dude or his capital.

There is already an attempt to unite the Philippines at that time under the Bolkiahs.
