What would it take (aside from doing badly in WW2) for the Party or Red Army to coup Stalin?

Stalin got away with slaughtering the Communist Party over and over again, so with the army and even with the secret police. It is in fact believed that Stalin died just before another purge was launched.

What would had taken for the army, party, police or even a combination finally say "enough" and overthrow him?

Stalin thought right after Barbarossa started his time was up. So, it really only takes a few people to be a little more bold at the moment and he'd be whacked.

what you also have to remember is that a lot of people in the party, police and army were loyal to stain because the purges benefited them, if your superior gets purged, you got a promotion, Stalin really did create a new generation of officers and government bureaucrats who owed their positions to him by the 1940s
