What would have been Andrew Jackson's thoughts had he lived to the 1850's?

Andrew Jackson died at 76 in 1845. If he had been somewhat healthier in life and lived another decade into the turbulent 1850's what would have been his views with regards to the continuation of slavery in the US and aggravations of the slave states?

Would he have had any influences as an elder statesman in the walk-up to war?

No. As shown in the attack on Charles Sumner, some among the Southern gentry were not all that in favor of dueling, which Jackson might try. Sure, the excuse of Preston Brooks for caning was that his friend who held everyone at gunpoint said Sumner wasn't a gentleman, but it didn't stop Preston from refusing all the challenges for duels he got afterwards. Maybe if Jacksons cane beating arm was still in practice he could give those Secesh whippersnappers a taste of their own medicine.

Seriously though, I think he might have (if not for censorship by Southern state governments) rallied rural poor, farmers, and middle classes against the Coastal interests and planters keeping them in the dirt.

Jackson was strongly against actions against what he saw was legitimate federal power (his reaction to the nullification crisis). On the other hand he was a slaveholder and had no brook for abolition. IMHO he would have been just fine with continuing slavery, the Dredd Scott decision etc. When it came to slavery and the other issues that brought about the Civil War (tariffs, infrastructure improvements like canals and railroads encouraged by the government and more) he would have been on the side of the south. I can't see him as a supporter of the fire eaters, OTOH if he saw the federal interference in "states rights" as egregious he might have supported secession.

Of course living to 92 to be there when the ACW started would have been quite something for the time. Of course, as President Cheeto believes, his ghost was there and had some strong opinions - many years later the ghost of Andrew Jackson would enter the body of Rodney King and inspire him to make the Jacksonian declaration "why can't we all just get along". This was the mantra of Old Hickory as we all know, unless of course you were a Native American, or someone who insulted his wife, or....

I wonder what Jackson would think of the election of 1860. To think, three of the four candidates were born in slave states, and two of them represented Illinois. It was the time of the West. Lincoln seemed the most frontier like of them, though perhaps just due to him building the log cabin he was born in being so well known to all American school children. Him being a rail thin laywer... Yah, not sure what Jackson would think, but if you want someone at an elected position it is best they know the law.

Jackson could probably respect Lincoln's wrestling background, at least.

Chuck Norris move over, Lincoln was able to build his own home when he was negative six months old!
