Lets Say the Filipino Rebels 1896-98 had managed to capture the walled city of intramuros before the american forces arrived in manila.
Philippines would now be called the Republic of Katagalugan not Philippines, I just don't know it's possible fate.
No, I don't think Philippines will have to change its name. Our Illustrados acknowledge that different Filipino people (whether that person is a Tagalog, Visayan, Ilocano or others) was being united by the Spaniards and calling the Philippines as Katagalugan is an insult to non-Tagalogs and the Malolos Constitution states that Spanish should be the national language of all Filipinos.
Therefore, insisting the Tagalog culture to the non-Tagalogs in a fragile country at that time will just balkanise the Philippines.
That is not the same Tagalog as the Tagalog as in the ethnic group, the "Tagalog" term of Katipunan has a different meaning and it will use the linguafranca of the uneducated class which obviously is not Spanish.
Philippines naturally is a diverse nation and I don't think Bonifacio and any Illustrados will force Tagalog language to non-Tagalogs. At that time of Rizal and Bonifacio's death, Spanish language was becoming mainstream and that language will be the lingua franca of all Filipinos.
Bonifacio is not of the ilustrado class this is why he was murdered by Aguinaldo, of course we have different views in history,Philippines might likely end up balkanized in this scenario.
I was wondering if, germany, american or even france would attempt to re-colonize Philippines. Since Germany is looking for a nice coaling station in the pacific would they attempt to open diplomatic channels and attempt to get themselves a naval base?
