What would be the Capital of British North America?

Something I hadn't thought about is that presumably the West Indies would be part of British North America, which would shift the center of gravity south, especially earlier. That makes a port as capitol much more likely, still probably New York.

Administrative capitol at New York (maybe a planned capitol at Brooklyn?) and royal retreat at Niagara Falls sounds like a really good idea.

I would think the West Indies would be governed separately. They're too rich to take a back seat in a North American confederation.

Well, the scenario is that the British monarchy gets exiled to North America, so unless they lose the West Indies at the same time, they'd presumably still be governed from North America

The concentration of ownership is a bit different. My understanding is that a lot of the sugar plantations in the West Indies had absentee owners in Britain and that they were managed by sons or caretakers. While the plantations and other money making enterprises in North America were locally owned and operated. I suspect because of that the owners would want the West Indies to be separate from North America. As those people had an immense amount of money (and thus access to power) they would likely get their wish.

I love the idea of a planned capital in Brooklyn. You know what'd be amusing? If the royal residence was named "Flatbush Palace". I like the idea of famously blue-collar Brooklyn becoming the area when the royalty and the hoity-toity of British-American society live.

Why not a planned capital on the Potomac as in OTL or declaring the whole of the Delmarva Peninsula a Royal Province for a Capital District? Maybe name it Georgetown or Edmonton? How about Arturia or Charlotte?

I do kind of like the idea of at some point a major war being won, Queen Victoria being on the throne, and a purpose built planned capital built somewhere. Once railroads, telegraph and coaches with springs come around, Niagara Falls would be a really spiffy place for the city of Victoria, BNA.

Because why not

It really is a good setting for a "steampunk" AH universe.

I still think that having the capital in Brooklyn would have both the benefits of being in/near a preexisting city and being a constructed capital since Brooklyn at that point was just a few towns compared to the city it is now. And since New York is the largest city in British North America it's only natural it'd be there. Especially considering that they Loyalists wouldn't have to go anywhere in this scenario.

Question: is this a permanent exile like Code Geass's Britannia or a temporary exile like Portugal's Metropolitan reversal? Second, when and how was the American rebellion defeated? Personally I think a planned capital would be highly likely if this is a permanent move.

I do like the Brooklyn idea, but I'd have to say that I don't think you'd see one single capital. The territories east of the proclamation line and south of Quebec would probably be reorganised as one single entity (with a Brooklyn or Philadelphia capital), with any territories outside run under the same sort of authority as Canada, until Quebec demands standing like the 'Brooklyn Parliament', and potentially those who settle in the Great Lakes region.

Heck, I fully assume that Britain would try and offload a mess of its debts over the Seven Years War to the Brooklyn Parliament - after which colonies west of the Proclamation Line would be allowed again.

After that, I'd say Montreal would do for Canada, and then a city on the site of OTL Detroit would probably replace Ottowa as capital for the Great Lakes (and North of them), New Orleans the capital of 'The Mississippi Region' (Basically the entire Mississippi watershed with some dispute on whether the Great Lakes region ends at the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, or further north and east), with another 2/3 going further west (something has to go on the border with Mexico, and something has to handle British Columbia).

Frankly, I think the divisions might work very well if/when the British rule of the Americas ends. Clear legal borders, with most of the territories having a coastal border (Great Lakes excluded).

I'm guessing code geass Britannia since there's been no mention of taking back the homeland
