Leaving aside the question of how they get there let us assume that in 2008 the US elects a fairly left-wing President. Bernie Sanders left at the very least if not more radical. The Democrats have control of the House and Senate as IOTL but a lot of the Democratic Congresspeople don't trust this new President. As a result seizing the means of production is out of the question but many of them might be brought round to the prospect of a compromise.
Within the limits set forth what could this left-wing President do within the confines of legislative compromise and the prerogatives of the executive office and how would it differ from the response of Obama?
