Welcome to this thread
In 1066 a dispute over who would rule England as king spiraled into war. The contestants were Harald Hardrada of Norway, Harold Godwinson of England and William the Bastard of Normandy. In our world Harold Godwinson first defeated the first challenger Harald Hardrade, thereby holding his grip on the English kingdom. He would soon march south to defeat William of Normandy, to whom he would lose.
William then became known as William the conqueror, becouse of his conquest of England.
But lets say that for some reason that Harald Hardrada conquerored England, becoming its king. Maybe William could confront Harold first, thereby weakening them both, after which Harald would defeat the winner between William and Harold. Maybe something else would lead to a norwegian conquest of England, what would it be, what could it be?
In such a scenario how would Englands fate change? What kind of butterflies might we see in the imediate future after such a scenario? What about 50 years after, 100 years after or 200 years after the norwegian conquest? How would the Norwegian conquest impact England and history compared to a Norman conquest?
- What would be the relations between the English and Norwegian kindoms under a common king?
- Would inheritance split the Kingdoms?
- Could the Norwegians hold on to England?
- Would Norway or England be the senior partner in the union? How would this change over time?
- Would this alternate England be more "germanic" as it is not conquered by a people speeking a Latin derived language?
- How would these kingdom be administrered?
- From where would these kingdom be administrered?
- Would the titles of king of Norway and king of England merge?
- Would this alternate England be more northern oriented than OTL?
- Would the Norwegian conquerors do the same Norman style landconfiscation and colonisation in England?
- What would be differences between OTL english culture and this alternate culture?
- Might this alternate scenario strengthen Greenlands position and chance of survival due to closer and larger trade possibilities?
