What were the long term goals of the British Empire after World War I?

Post World War I, it seemed like most British leaders realized that Indian independence was inevitable, but that it must come slow and gradually. So it seemed like they realize decolonization was coming even without World War II. Given that, I'm curious as to how exactly British leaders planned to maintain British influence around the world if they knew that the colonies will be independent in several decades?

I remember hearing somewhere that they set up elite boarding schools for the children of high level Indian civil servants, the judicial and military similar to create a ruling class that had shared British values.

That's interesting to know! But, Did they ever fear that an independent India may one day rival or surpass Britain in influence?

Unlikely - they were, after all, not white.
More generally, the impression I have (though I'm no expert!) is that the Empire would evolve into a wider Commonwealth in the same way as was already happening for the White Dominions. So local independence (under control of that aforementioned UK-educated elite), but still taking direction from London for foreign relations and military affairs. For India from the point of view of a Whitehall mandarin c.1910 this was probably seen as something coming by, maybe, 1960-70. For the Africans, perhaps next century... maybe...
