Reading of the Taiping Rebellion, there are numerous references to massive depopulation of many areas, with several cities, Nanjing being the prime example, supposedly losing the entirety of their civilian populations. This is only to be expected in a war that killed up to 20 million people. Yet most of these cities are crowded decades later. How was the loss made good?
