What Were the Demographic Effects of the Taiping Rebellion?

Reading of the Taiping Rebellion, there are numerous references to massive depopulation of many areas, with several cities, Nanjing being the prime example, supposedly losing the entirety of their civilian populations. This is only to be expected in a war that killed up to 20 million people. Yet most of these cities are crowded decades later. How was the loss made good? In short, how long did it take for China to recover from the demographic damage of the Taiping, and were there any permanent consequences?

i think you need to look at Hakka ethnic histories and spread of various chinese language / dialect for this, several southern accents is blamed for rebellion, and their number might be permanently reduced in China.

This is the 19th century. A loss of 20 million would barely slow the global population explosion.
