What was the North American party?

it was 11 O'Clock and I'm screwing around on Wikipedia trying to not sleep. I went onto he election of 1856 and there it said that the "North American Party" nominee was Fremont. Interested I spent the next few days looking for info on them, all of which came up hopeless. Does anyone know about these guys?

I assume you meant "Native American Party" better known as the Know Nothing's. The Know Nothing's were an Anti-Catholic, Nationalistic political party/secret society formed out of a fear of Catholics and Immigrants common for the time.

There's plenty of information on them, it's just they only lasted 7 years (1853-1860) as a political party so the information may appear inadequate.

No, I know about the nativist know nothings, led by Gilmore and eventually merged into republicans. If you go to the page it talks about the nomination for the North American Party.(just under know nothings)

it says in the wiki page of you read down far enough

the know-nothings were the "american party"

the "north american party" was a splinter faction of the know-nothings that was opposed to slavery (hence "northern") and supported the republicans rather than their own party

They were literally the "North" American Party, northern Know Nothings that bolted from the national American Party convention in protest over its direction regarding slavery.

No, it's fine, do you have any Idea to what this is though?

I really don't, as far as I can tell it was just a more radical form of the Republican Party (of the time, not the modern). It might have not even been an actual political party, just a split in the Republican Party between radicals and moderates.

It's interesting as far as I've read, the Democrats said they would have started Civil War had John C. Fremont won. We could of had an American Civil War in 1856 instead of 1860/1. No Abe, No Jefferson Davis, maybe no Lee, maybe no Grant, new American Civil War just because of a 4 year difference.

I'm going to look into this now. This would make an amazing alternate history discussion, maybe even a timeline.
