What to Read on Old Ashkenaz

I'm looking for reading suggestions about the East European Jewish communities c. 1900, especially in Russian Poland, Ukraine and Galicia. My main interest is in political activism and international connections, e.g. migration networks, but I am clueless enough to be happy for just about anything useful.

I can read English and German and deal with Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and most Romance languages if required, but am ignorant of any Slavic language.

Thanks!

It might be too introductory, and it covers the non-Jewish populations as well, but I would recommend: The reconstruction of nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999 By Timothy Snyder.
