So, I've got a couple of options for TLs. After trying to choose one for a few days, I finally decided to leave it up to the people of AH.com.

Options

A Hungarian in Madagascar: Moric Benyovzky, rather than handing Madagascar over to the French after being crowned king, establishes an independent state and is subsequently bankrolled by both the Americans and the British to interfere with, respectively, British and French aims in the Indian Ocean.

Empire of Steel and Steam: Oda Nobunaga survives Akechi Mitsuhide's assassination attempt and becomes Shogun--Nobunaga subsequently leads Japan to a more open, expansionist, and western-based foreign policy. Less militarism!

Greater Guiana: The Dutch manage to keep the rest of Guiana in 1814. Not exactly fleshed out, but I'm interested in this one.

Steel and Steam. Because a Rangaku (Dutch learning) Japan centuries before Meiji is cool. As for Moric, he was actually a Slovak, and I don't think the premise particularly works in that case.

America: Moric, go eff up the Brits!
Brits: Go eff up the Fre- wait, why are you screwing with us? Britain smashkillmaim SEPOYS!

Moric: Merde.

I'd go for an Empire of Steem and Metals. No matter where I look, I haven't found a single timeline on Japan where Nobunaga wins.

The Hungarian in Madagascar is also an interesting idea though.

Empire of Steel and Steam: Tokugawa is defeated by Oda Nobunaga--Nobunaga subsequently leads Japan to a more open, expansionist, and western-based foreign policy. Less militarism.

Might want to change the POD a little. Tokugawa was one of Nobunaga's generals (and in fact actually tried to get revenge on Nobunaga's assassins). A more accurate idea is to change it so Akechi Mitsuhide fails in his assassination attempt. Outside of that, sounds cool... Nobunaga had very progressive views towards foreign influence. A Nobunaga Shogunate would have a lot of really neat implications.

Solomaxwell6: Errr, that's totally what I meant, hehe....

Troyer and Sicarius: Well, I'll try to include some features of the other two in the final one I end up doing.

Go Nobunaga!

Though I think a man whose weapon was inscribed with the phrase "To Unite Under One Sword" or something of that nature might be a tad militaristic in some ways.
