What time period to set German Colonial timeline?

What kind of colonial timeline do you want. Similar to OTL? Or do you want a (significantly) larger German colonial empire? In that case you need a pre Napoleon POD. I would even go so far to say you need a POD around 1600 or even earlier. In 1800 the good colonies (the Americas, Indonesia, India) were already taken, while Germany wasn't even unified at that point. Germany simply was too late to gain a respectable empire. It can't compete with Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. The only thing left were scraps.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I do agree that Germany needs an early PoD to be unified enough to start a colonial empire so I may have to do even a late Middle Ages PoD.

What about Hanoverian colonies?
With the same monarch as the UK there might be an opportunity for joint colonies or even Hanoverian conquests with RN support to make sure no-one else interfered;

Nah why would Britain give Hannovera colonial empire? Any king who does that gets the wrath of the pailarment.

The best Pod is something like Maria Theresia a boy and a surviving Ostend Company.
On the other hand a big German empire empire in Africa and Pacific would be cool because it is basically a declaration of war on Britain. So any great war would be France (Alsace) and Britain (Germany threatens Britain the most) + other allies against Germany and Russia (Germany needs Russia if they anger Britain and Germany could help Russia modernising) + other allies. I really want to see that.

i slight out of field option is some environment where the netherlands & quite a lot of german states merge. (maybe siding with austria during the prusso-austrian war?)

the problem with all the pod's is that it will result in a not-germany germany.
germany that nowadays exists is a result van pussia-brandenburg growth.
many of the things that will make germany untie enough to claim some colonies will very likely butterfly prussian dominance.
