What the byzantines would do to the pope?

In a scenario that for some reasons (and with any PoD after the schism) the byzantine empire conquers the papal states, what they would do to the pope and to the vatican in general? Would them convert it to a orthodox church?

They would simply consider him as the patriarch of rome :D

If they treated him with the same amount of respect as a deposed emperor, his freedom's going to cost him an arm and leg, and where he's going he won't need eyes to see.

Probably asked "nicely"to revert some changes made to the scimism and abdicate in favour of a Roman Patriarch.
After that he will probably be moved to some far off monestery where he can't cause trouble.

Why would they?

Anti-Roman Crusade as revenge for 1204?

The PoD is the catholic-orthodox schism, waaaaaaaaay before the 1204 sack of constantinopolis

it can be anything, maybe the byzzies defeat the sejukls and invade rome with the intent of deposing the pope and ending the schism or anything like that

How about Manuel Komnenos succeeding in Italy and taking the PS a decade or three later if they can convince the HRE to remain at peace?

They would simply install their own Patriarch of Rome and either exile or kill the old Pope (in case of capture) or leave him in exile or hunt him down and kill him (in case he managed to run away).

Any POD for this should occur before 1040 or so, since after that the Byzantine presence in Italy was minimal and any attempt to take Rome would only occur after the presence in southern Italy solidified, which was impossible when they had bigger fish to fry all over the place.

Could the pope create a papal state somewhere else in europe? Maybe moving to Köln

They would probably either force the Pope to submit to Orthodox doctrine and the status of the other patriarchs, or they will find someone else who would. In the latter case, the Pope is forced to retire, with very pointy emphasis.

Treat the Pope largely as they had when they governed Italy, most likely.

They can try to push the Pope around, but there are limits. If they alienate the Catholic Church too much, then the schism is likely to get much more violent, and the Byzantines will find themselves surrounded completely by hostile powers, as all the Catholic kingdoms in Europe focus their energies on Byzantium. Given that this could likely short-circuit the Crusades, it might not be pretty.

I would tend to agree, though (as Dominus notes) they have to be cautious to not rile up the pope's adherants too much
