What modern OTL things would be dismissed as ASB?

I suppose the decline of Britain and its industry in the late 20th century, while France, Germany, Japan, South Korea thrived.

By this i mean- " one of the big three lets its economy slip behind France!".

I think Japan being one of the richest and more advanced countries in the world, would seem ASBish in a lot of (plausible) timelines.

I would say the precise opposite. When considering the history of East Asia, it is the poverty of China that is really ASBatty, not the wealth of Japan.

The german east-border at the Oder-Neisse. "Citys like Breslau and Stettin are now polish? Get real!"

Hitler is very ASB to. "A crazy bump from vienna becomes ruler of Germany and start a world war! You

Charles le Gaulle. "A french National hero with the name Gaul"

Well I suppose the United States going from a loose union of 13 states into the worlds most powerful nation militarily, politically, and economically could fall into ASB.

The german east-border at the Oder-Neisse. "Citys like Breslau and Stettin are now polish? Get real!"
Fallowing the same suit Poland without Lwów in it's borders would also be considered very strange.
Also the scale of polish resurge in the interwar period is also pretty unrealistic. I mean Poland NOT being a puppet state of either Germany or Russia? ;)

Cultural and economical impact of Internet would be described as "greatly overestimated".

Too many revolutions- in most TLs there nowhere near the amount of upheaval we see in the Modern world.

Hegemon changes way too many times- Britain to Germany to America to Germany to America to the Soviet Union and back to America. Most TLs have the nation that gained from the PoD at the start remaining a world power for eternity, which is something that's always irked me - a 'Clived' world would be Britwank by any definition!

Chamberlain's appeasement strategy- it seems ASB to normal folks today. For that matter, alot of WWII was rather ASB, come to think of it.

All together now: THE KAZHAK BORDER!! :p

Let's say OTL is a regular TL:

-60 years of cold war just ending in 1989 without firing a shot is a good one...its like the author got too lazy or something...deus ex machina...

-Half the dynasties in Europe, especially the older ones (Habsburg-Romanov-Ottoman) collapsing within a couple of years after the war...the author wanted something dramatic to draw attention

-Hitler, Stalin, FDR, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro, Mussolini...half of them look like cartoon characters...can't the author read a book and learn how to develop a goddamned character?

* Truman Democrat, Hollywood actor and union-leader, Ronald Reagan becomes one of the leaders of the neoconservative movement in the United States...

* A 5-term Democratic Congressional Representative from Nagadoches, Texas organizes the covert war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, despite accusations of drug abuse and womanzing, during a 2-term Republican administration...

* An Austrian former Nazi Colonel becomes head of the United Nations (UN) despite protests by Israel and the Soviet Union....

*Filipino action movie star Joseph "Erap" Estrada becomes President of the Philippines, openly has 11 mistresses and openly robs the Tresury, yet is saved from major jailtime by "People Power"....

What, exactly, do you propose the US should have done with the moon?

A mega-telescope?

Back in the 50s everyone said that by 2000 there would be cities in the Moon. Imagine you telling them that the USA would achieve to travel there in less than 20 years and then nothing more.

Decolonization, I guess.

It's completely ASB to think that the European Colonial powers would abandon Africa so quickly, and then watch for decades as things get worse and worse.

The Internet

Canada:p

The existence of a multilingual Belgium that is distinct from the Netherlands

The existence of an independent Moldova where a Romania exists

Having three countries in part on Boneo, while having only one country in Australia

I call the fact that using solar or wind when fossil fuels and nuclear power is far,far cheaper inefficient.
That is true, although the developement of those two things could have come into motion in the 19th century, way before fossil fuel and nuclear power were feasible. Especially thermoelectricity (which is not necessarily dependant upon the sun) still would be useful today.

Not developing something is much easier then developing something. :D
That's true, but it's illogical in this case.

Since when does the most logical consequence of something such as not wanting to blow yourself up by starting a war with someone who is certain to do so if war break out ASB?
Ever since Stanislav Petrov saved the world from nuclear annihilation by disbelieving his screens.

Except in very few locations windpower is damn near worthless. Solar and wind suffer from the same problem, the energy is both unreliable and diffuse.

None of those things happen to be true. The windpower potential of locaations in the USA is more than enough to power the USA, for example. With enough farms, windpower is reliable enough that only a tiny fraction of the generating capacity has to be backed up by nuclear and fossil fuels, and, compared to the Earth's land area, the area needed for windfarms is miniscule.

Anyway, back to the topic of the thread. The Apollo missions. The Space Shuttle. Bill Gates. Israel. The long peace from 1815 to 1914.

Of course, the fact that all these things happened kind of undermines our conceptions of what is and is not ASBish.

People willing (indeed, eager) to strap bombs to themselves and blow themselves (and others) to smithereens. And all for a vague concept.

Shouldn't that be one effectively divided between 3 nations, the other by a collection of nations? State and nation are interchangable.

Don't see how anybody with a knowledge of history can consider the differences between the two as ASB.

On that basis I would argue that nothing stated so far in this thread could be considered ASB; nothing stated is so unique or odd as least to anyone with a knowledge of history
