What is the optimal offensive course of action (COA) for Germany in 1916?

How well did Germany do in 1916? Would the best course of action have matched OTL’s, or have been a different emphasis?

Here are some options:

a) Verdun as in OTL

b) Verduan as intended originally – a place to maximize the exchange ratio

c) Verdun as a more traditional offensive seeking an operational breakthrough

d) Offensive in the east versus Russia

e) Offensive in the south against Italy

f) Defense and counterattack only

If the Germans for a western, eastern or southern offensive, what can they achieve in terms of damage to the enemy’s forces and gains in territory they can “bite and hold”?
